Women & Obesity

Apart from erratic eating habits and sedentary lifestyle, obesity may also commence due to hormonal changes occurring in the female body.Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or PCOD is one of the most common female endocrine disorders affecting women of reproductive age (12–45 years old) and is thought to be one of the leading causes of female subfertility.

The principal features are obesity, anovulation (resulting in irregular menstruation) or amenorrhea, acne, and excessive amounts or effects of androgenic hormones. The symptoms and severity of the syndrome vary greatly among women. While the causes are unknown, insulin resistance and obesity are all strongly correlated with PCOS.

WEIGHT GAIN DURING PCOS
Where PCOS is associated with overweight or obesity, successful weight loss is probably the most effective method of restoring normal ovulation/menstruation, but many women go for self planned crash diets which are rather a bad idea. Customized diets and sustained regular exercise may help. Some experts recommend a low GI diet.

PROPER MEDICATION AND COUNSELLING IN PCOS HELPS
Reducing insulin resistance by improving insulin sensitivity through medications, have been an obvious approach and initial studies seemed to show effectiveness. For proper medication and guided counseling on PCOD one should approach a gynecologist who would address your medical history and suggest medication suited to your body type.
