10 Diet Changes to Help Your Kids Beat the Exam Stress

Every student who aims to become a high-achiever will experience exam stress. It’s an unavoidable part of student life that can be a tough nut to crack. A child’s diet is one of the most neglected aspects during their exams. It has been observed that the kids who usually eat healthy end up eating a lot of junk food during exam times.
Not eating healthy can have its own ramifications.  Here are few tips on how you can beat the exam stress:

Start with a heavy and healthy breakfast
Oats, Jowar, Upma, eggs, Sprouts, Boiled chana, idli, dhokla etc are great options which provide a constant and steady supply of glucose. These are light on stomach also. A good breakfast improves the child’s concentration also.

Stick to frequent, small meals
Loading your children with three to four large meals in the day could make them sleepy and lethargic as blood is redirected to the stomach instead of the brain. Small, frequent, nutritious meals make sure that they have a constant flow of steady nourishment, keeping them alert and awake. Fresh fruits / fruit smoothies/ dry fruits / nuts / soups / interesting salads etc are good options in between major meals.

Include proteins in their diet
Carbs are digested quickly whereas proteins provide the much-needed slow burn giving a constant source of energy. A diet rich in protein (eggs, sprouts, cheela, chana, dhokla etc) increases tyrosine (an amino acid) levels in the blood and brain which help nerve cells manufacture chemicals which keep kids alert and active

Keep them hydrated
When kids sit in the comfort of their room and probably with their AC on, they do not feel thirsty and hence end up drinking less fluids. When dehydrated, the body and mind are dazed, restless. It is hard concentrating on studies. If they do not like drinking water then give them fresh fruit juices / buttermilk / nimbu pani / green tea / fresh coconut water to keep them going.

Avoid too much caffeine
Drinking too much coffee/energy drinks/tea/colas during exams can upset your kids’ sleep routine not letting them sleep properly when they want to. Don't drink too much coffee, tea or fizzy drinks. Caffeine will keep you up and reduce the clarity of your thinking.

Avoid too much sugar and processed foods
Foods like sweets, cookies, breads, ice creams etc can cause a sudden spike in sugar levels in the blood. After a while, when the stomach feels empty it could lead to craving for more such junk food.

Make sure they get their stress-buster foods
We know that exams are stressful and our body’s requirement for certain water-soluble vitamins like Vitamin B-complex and C, minerals like zinc goes up. These minerals help in the synthesis and functioning of adrenal hormones that basically are our stress-fighting hormones. Brown rice, nuts, eggs, fresh veggies and fruits can help.

Give them foods to increase efficiency of the brain
Anti-oxidants like Vitamins A, C and E reduce damage to brain cells due to increased stress by fighting the free radicals. Eggs, fish, carrots, pumpkins, green leafy veggies, fresh fruits can help meet this requirement. They also help increase the body’s immunity as well as reduce chances of the child falling sick during exams.

Don’t miss out on memory enhancer foods
Omega 3 fatty acids are required to enhance brain function and memory. Fish is a very good source of omega 3 fatty acids. Vegetarians can add walnuts, flax seeds (alsi), pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds (til), soyabean oil, canola oil to their diets. Omega 3 fatty acid supplements are also available.

Avoid eating outside food during exams
Stress can reduce your child’s immunity and make them more prone to infections. So, avoid eating outside food as much as possible.

Practice these healthy habits for stress-free exams and increase the efficiency of brain for better results.

DIETARY MANAGEMENT FOR TYPE 1 DIABETES

At its core, type 1 diabetes management is composed of a handful of elements: blood glucose control and insulin management, exercise, nutrition and support.

No food is out of bounds but food choices are an important part of your diabetes management. Eating a balanced diet is something we should all try to do. It’s fine to have a treat every now and again but the foods you choose are an important part of your diabetes treatment, along with medication, testing and being active.

A healthful eating pattern, regular physical activity, and often pharmacotherapy are key components of diabetes management. For many individuals with diabetes, the most challenging part of the treatment plan is determining what to eat. There is not a “one-size-fits-all” eating pattern for individuals with diabetes. The ADA recognizes the integral role of nutrition therapy in overall diabetes management and has historically recommended that each person with diabetes be actively engaged in self-management, education, and treatment planning with his or her health care provider, which includes the collaborative development of an individualized eating plan.

SOME USEFUL DIET TIPS:

· Learn About Carbohydrate Counting

· Avoid sugar sweetened beverages

· Be sure to eat breakfast. It provides a good start to the day

· Eat three meals per day at regular times and space meals no more than six hours apart. You may benefit from a healthy snack

· Limit the amount of high-fat food you eat such as fried foods, chips and pastries.

· Eat more high-fibre foods such as whole grain breads and cereals, lentils, dried beans and peas, brown rice, vegetables and fruits

· Foods high in fibre may help you feel full and may lower blood glucose (sugar) and cholesterol levels

· Include fish, lean meats, low-fat cheeses, eggs, or vegetarian protein choices as part of your meal.

· Avoid Packaged and processed foods e.g. biscuits, chips, cookies, packaged juices, packaged soups, ketchups etc.

· Prefer fresh and natural foods over processed and convenience foods

Living with type 1 diabetes is tough but with proper care can be a footnote in your life's story. Balancing nutrition, exercise and proper blood glucose management techniques with the rest of your life's priorities mean anything is possible.

DIET FOR FRACTURED BONES

HEALTHY BONES, HEALTHY JOINTS, STRENGTH IN MOTION, ACTION IN LIFE

Bone is a highly vascular organ and a dynamic tissue which is remodeled constantly throughout life. A bone fracture is a medical condition in which there is a break in the continuity of bone. A bone fracture can be the result of high force impact or stress, or a trivial injury as a result of certain medical conditions that weakens the bones such as osteoporosis, bone cancer, osteogenesis imperfecta etc. A bone fracture can be a defining moment in anybody’s life – the break itself is an isolated incident, while the healing process can take weeks, months or even years depending on the nature of the injury.

Food is one factor that can affect how quickly a broken bone heals. A good nutritious diet followed prior to injury means you will have a quicker recovery time than someone who begins the diet after the fracture. Nutrition is one of the many elements that influences bone strength. Good nutrition lays a firm foundation for a healthy body and strong bones. Diet also plays a significant role in protecting the skeleton.

SIMPLE TIPS TO FOLLOW TO STRENGTHEN YOUR BONES

1. Intake of about 600 – 800 ml of single toned milk and its products provides a good amount of calcium for bone strengthening.

2. Sesame seeds (White til) are an excellent source of dietary calcium. A tsp of sesame seeds taken daily with a cup of milk can enhance calcium intake and bone health.

3. Knead your dough with puree of any green leafy vegetable like radish leaves,  methi, bathua etc. This will again make sure that you are having calcium rich rotis.

4. Including soyabean two to three times in a week in your diet ensures a good calcium intake. Nutrella, tofu are excellent sources of calcium. Also soya milk is a very good option for those who are lactose intolerant.

5. To ensure absorption of calcium into the bones a sufficient intake of Vitamin D is very important. Spending 15 – 30 minutes in the sun daily without sunscreen helps the body to synthesize sufficient amounts of Vitamin D. Vitamin D is also present in some of the foods like milk, meats, eggs and some fortified cereals.

6. Magnesium is an extremely important mineral that works like a partner with calcium and help strengthen bones. Some common foods that contain magnesium include nuts, beans, legumes, whole grain cereals, seafood, dairy products etc.

7. Include 1 – 2 servings of dals and pulses e.g. dals, besan, sprouts, rajmah, black chana etc to maintain a good supply of dietary protein.

8. Add foods that act as natural anti inflammatory agents both to reduce the pain and formation of new connective tissue called collagen. Foods rich in Vitamin C like lemon, Tomatoes, Raw amla juice, Guava, oranges etc are excellent for this purpose. Vitamin C helps to strengthen your bones and the supportive connective tissue.

9. Cold drinks should be strictly avoided. Soft drinks phosphorus which leaches the calcium from our bones making are bones more fragile.

10. Avoid extra salt in your diet e.g. chips, achar, chutney, sauces, packaged and processed foods etc. It is believed that too much salt in your diet can increase the losses of calcium from your bones thereby making them weaker.
